Marat News: Marat spent the last few days in Boca Raton practising with Yevgeny Kafelnikov and his trainer Miguel Maeso who has come across from Valencia to be with him in Miami. Marat arrived in Miami on Friday the 21st. Hernan Gumy who went home to be with his wife who is expecting a baby (still waiting) will fly back on Tuesday to Miami to be with Marat. Marat and Hernan Gumy get on very well together and they are a good team. That is why Hernan will be with Marat.
Marat has been working hard, he is feeling fit and hitting the ball well. He is still out there and still trying to do his best. If he didn't love his "job" he would not be there. All he needs is to find that magical link and win and he knows the desire will be there. He is taking it day by day but whatever the desire is still there to win.

Wywiad z maratowego OeSa (radze usiąść !!)

We managed to catch up with Marat on his return to Moscow and he gave us this interview.

Q: Marat welcome home

M: Thanks a lot its been a while.

Q: How do you feel?

M: I think really good – are you asking about tennis or my private life?

Q: I know you don’t like to talk about your private life so lets talk tennis. First of all where have you been since Miami?

M: Again asking about my private life – that’s ok! Went to the Dominican Republic with friends for a celebration of a birthday and it was really nice.
And on tennis - I think I was in very good shape in Australia and was a bit unlucky against Baghdatis – it was a good match and if I had won it things would have looked different. Then I went back to Moscow, I suffered an injury which sidelined me for two weeks and I think I got out of the positive rhythm. I then flew to the States and during the whole time I felt physically in a good shape but never got the rhythm back in my game. Both my losses in Memphis and Vegas were very disappointing and I didn’t play well. Against Melzer in Indian Wells I played well for certain periods but couldn’t really convert it into a win.
I was really disappointed and had some very negative thoughts after the match and I think this is what lost me my confidence completely getting into Miami.

The fact that I didn’t win the match against Reynolds in Miami was not a positive sign as this was the kind of matches in the past I would have won easy. I did a lot of thinking after that and took some decisions in this regard.

Q: Would you mind sharing these decisions with us?

M: Well I think that I have done a lot in tennis from a long career. Don’t forget I started at a very young age and have been travelling for over 10 years and I am paying the price now. I have decided to really take all the pressure from me, to keep on playing for as long as I am still enjoying it and not to look at the rankings or set myself too high a goal.

Q: What is your future tournament schedule?

M: I really want to keep on playing and give myself the chance to be competitive at a high level. That is why I have applied for a Wild Card basically at all the clay court tournaments. I hope that my past results are still remembered so I can get those Wild Cards and get a chance to play.

Q: So where do you think you will be playing in the next few weeks?

M: Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg and it looks like I’ll be playing in my “home” town – Valencia and also in Munich. I am still not sure and some of them do not depend on me but on the tournament directors.

Q: Where is Hernan Gumy these days?

M: Hernan is one of the better things that has happened to me in the last few years. He’s a great coach and a good friend and I am sorry we did not get together earlier though I have known him many many years. His wife is in her 9th month of pregnancy and due to give birth any day now so he is back in Argentina with her and if all goes well he will be back to Europe around Rome or Hamburg.

Q: So will you be by yourself until then?

M: Well I still have some good friends left and Marc Rosset was very kind to offer to accompany me in the next few events. I am very grateful to him and it looks like he will help me out until Gumy comes back.

Q: What is your expectation for the clay court season?

M: No real expectations - though deep inside there is always the wish to find my consistency and confidence and have a good stretch of matches. Like I said I’ll take it match by match, stay fit and hopefully things will get together.
My first success came on the clay court on this European swing and maybe this will happen again.

Q: Any last words for your fans?

M: Well definitely not last words but I want to thank them all for their love and support. To let them know I am still around and I’m hoping to still give them moments of joy on the court.

Q: Well good luck Marat and thanks for talking to us.

M: Thanks to you guys and let us cross our fingers for the Russian team during the Davis Cup tie. We have to give them all our support.

Czekałam na jakiegoś niusa z jego obozu, co prawda coś bardziej konkretnego niż wywiad (przynajmniej jeśli chodzi o starty), ale dobre i to.

Ja tu nie widzę powodu do siadania przed przeczytaniem. Wink

Skoro Marat jest nadal w tym "biznesie" i wirzy, ze jeszcze wszystko się poskłada do kupy u niego, to ja też, bo jak mogłoby być inaczej? Nie obiecuję sobie za wiele, ale też nie skreślam tego człowieka. Muszę wierzyć, że on wie co jest dla niego najlepsze, a jeśli nie wiem, to że słuch mądrych ludzi, którzy mu dobrze radzą.

Trzymaj się MARAT!!!!

A ja się cieszę, że zmienił zdanie i jednak chce grać tak długo jak mu to będzie sprawiało przyjemność.
Widać, że zdaje sobie sprawę z konsekwencji jego ostatnich dokonań na korcie, ale jest też na tyle barwną postacią, że nie powinien mieć problemów z uzyskiwaniem dzikich kart. Nawet jeśli dostanie do eliminacji - cóż tam też zdarzają się ciekawe pojedynki na miarę finałów i po prostu należy to traktować jak wydłużony turniej, a nie jak coś drugiej kategorii - niestety w drabinkach brakuje miejsc dla wszystkich chętnych.
Mógłby tylko zauważyć, że Orange Warsaw Open też jest na mączce Very Happy

ehhh... marzenia, ale kiedyś nie wierzyłam, że do Sopotu przyjedzie Very Happy

Safin accepts the second wild card in Valencia
The Russian Player back to Open Comunidad Valenciana after his absence last year
The organization of the tournament decided to grant to Marat Safin the second Wild Card to take part of the main draw. The Russian player was the World Number 1 on 2000 and won 2 Grand Slam (US Open 2000 and Australian Open 2005). Safin adds 15 singles tittles in his career. After his absence last year by an injure, the russian player, 2006 semifinalist (lost against Nicolas Almagro) will start the clay court season in one of its favourites places. At the end of the week, the tounament will announce the Third Wild Card after Tommy Robredo and Marat Safin.
